Role Type: Voluntary / Flexible

About the Role:

We are looking for compassionate and dedicated Volunteer Mentors to support our team of Listening Volunteers. This role is essential for fostering a supportive environment where volunteers feel prepared, confident, and part of a like-minded community, enhancing our mission to offer meaningful support to callers.

The Volunteer Mentor will play an instrumental role in guiding volunteers to navigate complex conversations, manage personal boundaries, and continue growing in their listening abilities. In addition to group facilitation, this role offers one-on-one support and ongoing mentorship to ensure each volunteer has a strong foundation for helping others.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monthly Debriefing Sessions
Lead one Monthly Volunteer Debriefing Session every 4 months to reflect on calls, share insights, and explore best practices. These sessions aim to foster growth, celebrate successes, and provide guidance on areas for improvement, allowing volunteers to feel supported, valued, and connected.

  • Advice & Support Group Leadership
Facilitate a dynamic advice and support group, creating a continuous space for volunteers to openly discuss challenges, seek advice, and build connections. This group is an opportunity for volunteers to lean on one another and receive real-time support on handling complex calls.

  • One-on-One Mentorship
Provide individual support and mentorship as and when needed, helping volunteers strengthen their listening and communication skills, build confidence, and develop strategies for managing emotionally challenging calls.

  • Feedback and Development
Offer constructive feedback, ensuring they feel empowered and effective in their roles. Encourage a feedback loop where volunteers can share suggestions for program improvement.

  • Training and Resources
Share relevant training materials, resources, and best practices in active listening and emotional support, and help facilitate workshops or training sessions to enrich volunteer skills and resilience.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in active listening and providing support, ideally in a helpline, mental health, or volunteer environment.

  • Prior experience in supervision, mentorship, or volunteer coordination.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to lead group discussions, foster inclusivity, and create a compassionate and supportive environment.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to remain composed and provide guidance in emotionally charged situations.

Why This Role Matters:

As a Volunteer Mentor, your leadership and support will have a direct impact on the confidence and effectiveness of our volunteers. By sharing your experience, offering encouragement, and providing a safe space for reflection, you will help ensure our volunteer team remains resilient, effective, and inspired to make a positive difference in the lives of those we serve.
